(For The Prayer Challenge Devotional)
Psalm 27:5 – "For in the time of trouble He shall hide me in His pavilion: in the secret of His tabernacle shall He hide me; He shall set me up upon a rock."
There is something very comforting about knowing that when things are going well, God is there for you. And when things go sour, God is still there for you. We all face trouble from time to time. The issue is not the trouble itself. However, the real issue is how we choose to deal with that trouble. When trouble comes do we run to things and/or people first for a sense of security? Or do we go to the Lord first in prayer, seeking His face? If we’re wise, we’ll fulfill the latter instead of the former.
When there is impending danger, God has the ability to hide you in a special way. In the Old Testament, the Tabernacle was the portable dwelling place for the divine presence of God from the time of the Exodus from Egypt through the conquering of the land of Canaan. The innermost section of the Tabernacle was the Holy of Holies which housed the Ark of the Covenant (also known as the Ark of the Testimony). In it there was Aaron’s rod that budded, a golden pot of manna, and the Ten Commandments. The top part of the Ark of the Covenant was called the Mercy Seat, which was made of pure gold. On the Mercy Seat were two golden cherubim on opposites sides that had their wings facing each other. In between the two cherubim was the presence of God (see Exodus 25:10-22; Numbers 17; Hebrews 9:4). The secret of the tabernacle is God’s awesome presence!
When you are hiding somewhere, you feel safe, right? Well there is no safer place to be than in the presence of Almighty God. With God, there is true life and growth (the budding). You can feast on the truth in His Word, and rest assured He will provide for your physical hunger too (the manna). And you can receive great instruction on how to love God and how to love His people (His commandments). When trouble comes, knowing you have access to growth, God’s provision, and His instructions is very important.
When you know God is there for you, you can stand in faith. Know that Christ Himself is a sure foundation. Some foundations can crumble from under you because of too much weight. That is not so as it relates to Christ. When trouble comes, we can cast all of our cares upon Him, for He cares for us (1 Peter 5:7). No matter how much the weight of our cares upon Christ is, He cannot crumble. But He can surely hold us up. So let the winds blow and let the storms rage. Trouble is no match for Jesus. We can stand in spite of the trouble!
Prayer Focus: Lord, I thank You for being there for me, especially during my time of trouble. Thank you for keeping me safe from harm as You hide me. Then to keep me from falling, You set my feet on solid ground. I trust that Jesus is my Rock and I am convinced that all other ground is sinking sand.
Study Focus: Psalm 27:5, 37:39; Isaiah 28:16; 33:2; Psalm 9:9, 32:7, 34:19, 73:26, 126:5-6, 138:7; Nahum 1:7; John 16:33; 1 Corinthians 10:4; Ephesians 6:11-14; 1 Peter 5:7
Reflection: No matter what tests, trials, or tribulations come our way, we should know that we can stand and depend on Christ, for He is our solid Rock (1 Corinthians 10:4). Gravity holds us down, and while we stand, there is enough friction so we do not slip off of the Rock. With our feet firmly planted, trouble cannot knock us down. When trouble comes, don’t run to temporary things, but run to the eternal God Whose presence is more than enough.
I just want to encourage and inspire as many people as I can for Jesus Christ.
